Quirky and Creepy Carved Sandstone Faces

Roadside Attractions and Curiosities

Nelson, Nebraska

Located in Nelson, Nebraska along US Highway 14/Main Street and W. 4th Street is the WM Stansbury Building. The building is in the Southwest corner of the intersection. Look for “Al’s Hardware” painted on the north side of the Stansbury Building. There are 12 faces carved into in sandstone, along with a pair of owls. These faces represent at least a couple of people known to have lived in the area in the late 1800’s and several that are unknown. They’ve been lost to history, and no one locally can verify who some of these people were or why on earth Mr. Stansbury would have immortalized then in life-sized sandstone carvings. Teddy Roosevelt also appears on the wall. But why? This attraction isn’t known (at least that I could find), in the National Roadside Attraction apps, but I have submitted it for inclusion in Roadside America. This is certainly worth a stop. It is curious, quirky, and kind of creepy.
