I found myself traveling east through Kansas again in early May. As with most trips through eastern Colorado and continuing through northern Kansas, it was quite windy. I’ve stopped expecting it to be anything but windy on this route. I was returning to Superior, Nebraska for family business, but I wasn’t under time pressure, so I decided to spend a few moments doing a few things I’ve failed to do in the past on this route. As I approached Bird City, Kansas I didn’t have any traffic behind me, so I quickly pulled over and stopped on Highway 36 to take a quick picture of the building just west of Bird City that has a windmill painted on it and announcing Bird City as you arrive. It is neat, close to the road, and someone is proud of it. Thus, I deemed it worthy of a picture.

Moving on to the east, I stopped in Norton, Kansas to finally peek at two more Roadside Attractions there. One is a restored Conoco Station which is interesting. The inside is also restored, and it is worth peering in the windows.

Just down the street to the south is a restored Sinclair Station, complete with the green dinosaur on the roof. It appears to me that the building is now actually in use as a Title Company whereas the Conoco Station is just for show. Both places are easily worth the two-minute side trip off Highway 36 or Highway 283 to check out. Both are located on South 1st Ave between Washington St. and W. Main St.

Unexpected today was seeing a zebra grazing with horses on the outskirts of St. Francis, Kansas.

Keep your eyes open and you’ll be surprised at what you can see.
